- I've been using Couriers for on-demand PPP routing for a little over a
- year now and have generally been happy with how things work. Recently,
- however, I've determined empirically that I'm not getting anywhere near
- the performance that I should be.
-
- The configuration of modems is identical at both ends. Both have the
- latest 33.6 firmware and the serial connection between router and modem is
- 115.2kbps. I use the following config on the modems:
-
- at&f
- &a3 adds arq modulation, and ecc status on connect
- &b1 fixed serial speed
- &h1 hardware transmit flow control (default)
- &i0 disable xon/xoff (default)
- &k3 disable mnp5, only support v.42bis
- &m5 require ecc connection, hang up if none happens
- &r2 hardware receive flow control (default)
- m0 speaker off
- x7 most verbose connect response mode
- s7 = 60 wait 60 secs for carrier
- at&w
-
- The modems are a local call away from each other; the lines do not inhabit
- the same CO, though. With a clean line (ie the ARQ LED isn't blinking), I
- only get around 24kbps throughput, as measured by an IP-based app
- shoveling data across the connection. As the modem isn't connected to a
- computer, getting the ATI6 stats is tricky.
-
- Can anyone see anything obviously wrong with the settings above? Given
- that V.42bis should never decelerate transfers and the line quality is
- known to be reasonably good (I consistently got 28.8 connections over the
- same lines between Couriers in the past), I can't understand why I'm not
- seeing significantly higher throughput.
